St. John's College's Levan Hall Wins LEED Gold Cert (PHOTOS)

In a recession, many universities cut back or even eliminate entire programs, and funding for green initiatives often falls by the wayside. But St. John’s College has found a way to continue Santa Fe’s dedication to sustainability.

Thanks to a $5 million gift by Dr. Norman Levan, a Bakersfield, Ca. dermatologist who received his Master’s degree from St. John’s, the school has just received a LEED Gold rating from the Green Building Certification Institute in Washington, DC for its brand new low-energy-use and resource conservation features in Levan Hall, the Graduate Institute building.

This impressive building utilizes a passive solar design, natural ventilation, a natural water system that captures storm runoff to use in bathrooms, and cork flooring as a sustainable alternative to wood.

“It is truly a lovely place to work and study,” Graduate Institute Director Matthew Davis says. “The Graduate Institute is fortunate to call such a stunning achievement its home.”
