Plaza Protesters Show Solidarity with Tibet

Today, members of the Regional Tibetan Youth Congress (RTYC), the Tibetan Association of Santa Fe and Students for a Free Tibet are participated a day-long fast at the Plaza.

"We are fasting today for the 10 monks and one nun that have self immolated as a result of the torture and imprisonment of Tibetan people by the Chinese government," Sonam Tsering, President of RTYC, says.

Since March of this year, 11 Tibetans have self-immolated (lit themselves on fire) in a desperate call for freedom in Tibet. Of these 11, five died immediately; the other six were captured by the Chinese government, and their whereabouts are still unknown.

"They all called for the return of the Dalai Lama and freedom in Tibet before self-immolating," Kathy Nikeefe, a member of Students for a Free Tibet, tells SFR.

Santa Fe is just one of 65 other cities around the world hosting protests in conjunction with the G20 Conference in Cannes, France.

"We are hoping to get the attention of world leaders so these atrocities will stop," Rigzin Latoe of the Tibetan Association of Santa Fe explains.
