Immigrant DLs: Foreign Nationals Can Now Also Verify Status in Las Cruces

By Alexa Schirtzinger
Susana-martinez-head

Gov. Susana Martinez announced today that 10,000 New Mexico drivers required to reaffirm their residency can do so in both Las Cruces and Albuquerque.

Though Martinez' initial policy would have required all 10,000 license-holders to reverify their status in Albuquerque, today the administration announced that residents may also do so in Las Cruces.

The new policy provides some answers to the complaints that making 10,000 people come all the way to Albuquerque to re-verify their residency status was needlessly burdensome, particularly if they lived far away.

The revised policy also helps some undocumented immigrants who would have been unable to make the trip because of Border Patrol checkpoints.

According to the Alamogordo Daily News, foreign nationals required to reverify their residence status may do so in Las Cruces beginning Aug. 9.

Though Martinez' effort to end New Mexico's practice of allowing undocumented immigrants to obtain driver's licenses failed during this year's legislative session, she has promised to ask lawmakers to revisit the issue in a special redistricting session next month.
