Las Conchas: 'Extreme Fire Activity' Yesterday

Wildfire expands to 130,691 acres; is still only 30 percent contained

The Las Conchas wildfire's path of destruction is far from over. Yesterday, heat and wind pushed to its current size, at 130,691 acres and only 30 percent contained.

According to InciWeb, a website that aggregates wildfire information from several agencies, pilots flying overhead observed "300-500 foot flames moving up Polvadera Peak," northwest of Chicoma Mountain.

Most of the activity seems to have been within the fire perimeter; a 3,000-acre increase in size since yesterday is modest compared with the tens of thousands of acres the Las Conchas fire expanded during its first week in late June.

Still, the Donaldson fire in southern New Mexico, despite reaching more than 100,000 acres, is already 90 percent contained--whereas only about one-third of the Las Conchas fire has been contained.

Informational meetings on the Las Conchas fire will be held today (Wednesday) at the following times:

3 pm at the La Cueva Fire Station #2

6 pm at Madonna Hall in Jemez Springs, where officials will discuss post-fire remediation and precautions

6:30 pm tomorrow in Canones, location TBA
