NIGHT VIDEO: Los Alamos Burns

By Alexa Schirtzinger
conchas-at-night

Updated 10 am: From Santa Fean Michael Zeiler, an excellent (if haunting) night video of the Las Conchas fire, most recently estimated at 92,735 acres.

The Las Conchas fire grew again last night, but officials at Los Alamos National Laboratory say backburning on the lab's 36-square-mile property was successful in keeping the wildfire at bay.

According to a statement, Los Alamos Fire Chief Doug Tucker estimates a "less than 10 percent chance" that spot fires will start on lab property. (Click here for LANL's video of the preventive burning.)

Still, the fire is only 3 percent contained. So without further ado, here's the video (actually a photo time-lapse). Read Zeiler's description below.

From Zeiler:
On this fourth day of the devastating Las Conchas fire which is threatening Los Alamos, New Mexico, the night sky finally cleared enough to see the flames licking all around the labs and the city.

This time-lapse video is comprised of 113 photographs taken 30 seconds apart. Each photograph is shown for one second. My vantage point is from my home on a ridge just to the north of Santa Fe.

You can see quick changes in the fires, stars in the sky, and emergency vehicles making their way on fire duties. The brightest lights are the headquarters of the Los Alamos labs and other technical areas are to the left. To the right is the Los Alamos town site. Below the headquarters is the suburb of White Rock.
