SURVEY: Extend SFPS Superintendent's Contract Before New Board Takes Office?

Authority battle between Santa Fe school boards heats up

By now you've probably heard: Last week, Santa Fe's outgoing school board floated the idea of voting to extend sitting Superintendent Bobbie Gutierrez' contract before the newly elected board takes office. Like it? Hate it? Take the survey!

At last week's school board meeting, outgoing board member Angelica Ruiz moved to hold a vote on extending Gutierrez' contract--which expires this June--at the outgoing board's final meeting, scheduled for this Thursday, Feb. 17 at 4:30 pm (at SFPS administration offices on 610 Alta Vista).

Though there's an argument that the sitting board is more acquainted with Gutierrez and her performance as superintendent, incoming board member Steven Carrillo criticized the move as "patently undemocratic," especially since voters approved three brand-new board members--all of them running on platforms of change--in the Feb. 1 election.

Incoming board member Glenn Wikle took a different tack: He devised a survey to gauge community support for extending Gutierrez' contract or waiting for the new board to take office. Click here to weigh in.
