A Few Happy Democrats

A brief look at Ben Ray Luján's victory party

By Julia Goldberg

For a few moments on election night, Nov. 2, 2010, you might have thought it was 2008 again, and Democrats were celebrating victories near and far. Well, at least you might have thought that if you'd wandered over to Hotel Santa Fe to snap some photos and video of local Dems at US Rep. Ben Ray Lujan's victory party (Lujan beat Republican Tom Mullins with 56.8 percent of the vote).

Among those in attendance: Mayor David Coss, Santa Fe state Reps. Brian Egolf (who walked away with 75.7 percent of the vote against Republican Brigette Russell) and Lucky Varela (78.4 percent against Bob Walsh), county mag judge George Anaya (uncontested) and, or course, Speaker of the House Ben Lujan Sr (also uncontested, following a very tight primary election).

SFR had to get back to another bar at which we were drinking whiskey and watching national returns (or maybe it was the other way around), but we did catch a few moments of the Democrats' cheer (or relief, as the case may be).
