At Least Someone Was Happy

Happy Faces at Ben Ray Lujan's Victory Party

By Julia Goldberg

Hotel Santa Fe was the place to be on election night 2010—at least for Santa Fe Democrats. Mayor David Coss mingled and waited for US Rep. Ben Ray Luján to come and greet the crowd.

Santa Fe County Magistrate Judge George Anaya had an easy night—he faced no opposition on the general election ballot.

Santa Fe County Democratic Chairman Richard Ellenberg played host, as attendees watched TV and waited for Luján to come down.

State Rep. Brian Egolf, D-Santa Fe, won his race easily against Republican challenger Brigette Russell for District 47. Unofficial tallies show Egolf with 75.7 percent of the vote.

New Mexico Speaker of the House Ben Lujan Sr., D-Santa Fe, waited with his wife for their son to come and claim victory.

Despite the somber mood for Democrats after gubernatorial candidate Diane Denish's lost, the crowd was excited and happy at Luján's, victory party.

Luján did not appear until the results of the race clearly showed him winning against Republican challenger Tom Mullins. Unofficial tallies show Luján with 56.8 percent of the vote for New Mexico's 3rd congressional district
