We all know what it’s like to be stuck in a drought. Summer rainfall in Santa Fe was far below the average this year. Our plants are drooping, the dogs are panting and that dust just won’t settle on the ground.

Capturing those fleeting water droplets is no easy task. Even with a fully-equipped garden, water conservation is still a necessity here in the high desert. In his book, Downey offers a wide range of tips to make homes green and beautiful—from landscaping and use of shade to irrigation and erosion control.

But Harvest the Rain isn’t just a how-to book for water capturing. Downey also offers up some facts about water conservation, a history of rain and provides an impetus for harvesting rain.

This weekend, Downey presents his book at two booksigning events across town, starting at the Santa Fe Farmers Market where he, suitably, will be under the water tower. Later in the day, he’ll be heading the St. John’s College to participate in its alumni weekend.
