The Pittsburgh Post Gazette called La Pocha Nostra "life-altering." The San Francisco radically political performance artists hold biannual international workshops. An Oslo participant said of Pocha Nostra's interactive and inter-disciplinary performance Mapa/Corpo, "When he reached out his hand to me and I took it, it was almost like looking Christ in the eyes." Don't expect the Rapture, nevertheless La Pocha Nostra have involeved "a Muslim body-robe, dances with barbed wire, rifles, nudity, bullhorns, live acupuncture, and a general techno-shamanistic-Mexican-paramilitary-S&M aesthetic." Founding member Guillermo Gómez-Peña will read at Tipton Hall Thursday January 14 at 6 pm ($5). U.S. / Latino performance art pioneers and art and academic world darlings Assistant Professor of Performance at the Chicago Institute of Art Roberto Sifuentes and MacArthur Fellow Gómez-Peña are holed up for two weeks at SFAI collaborating on their latest book, Radical Performance Pedagogy.
