Babies Havin' Babies!

New Mexico has the second-highest teen birth rate in the nation, the federal Centers for Disease Control reported yesterday. We came in behind Mississippi and ahead of Texas.

However, you have to dig a little deeper into the data (PDF here) to see that New Mexico's teen birth rate has dropped 43 percent since 1991. Apparently that's when they started counting.

Here's a chart that breaks down birth rates over time by race and ethnicity:



Final interesting tidbit: New Mexico has one of the lowest birth rates for twins, and the lowest birth rate for triplets, in the country.
