SFPS Makes State Auditor's 'At-Risk' List

School district says it's on top of the issue

Santa Fe Public Schools didn't turning in its annual internal audit on time last year, causing the school district to make State Auditor Tim Keller's "at-risk" list today.

The designation means that the school district failed to send its most recent yearly internal audit to Keller's office on time.

"It's a procedural issue," says school district Chief of Staff Latifah Phillips. "It should be wrapped up on our end by the end of the day."

Keller tells SFR that his office did receive a letter from the school district about the issue today, which he says he'll be reviewing soon. He echoes the point that the at-risk label is indeed procedural.

"In terms of designation, your audits are in or not," he says. "Whether your reasons are good or not is not related to being on that list."

SFPS' audit was due to the state back in November, but Phillips says the school district's internal auditor has been battling an illness on and off since last summer, causing the delay.

"It's one of those things where your staff person is out," she says. "They have rights as well, so you want to honor that."

She adds that the school district's accounts are fine.

Other agencies that made the list include the state Public Education Department, the city of Española and the New Mexico Sentencing Commission.
