Behind This Week's Cover

This week's cover story is an in-depth look at New Mexico's slow climb to economic recovery in wake of the Great Recession.

Because the state's economic growth is among the slowest in the nation, we at SFR thought of a picture of a snail on a racetrack would best represent the cover story's main theme. Art Director Anson Stevens-Bollen immediately took to the task, making it his goal to design the picture that appears on this week's cover.

Indeed, Stevens-Bollen ended up spending countless hours perfecting the cover image, which is illustrated in a time-lapse video of his process below:

All we can say at SFR is that we're grateful for Stevens-Bollen's work.

Meanwhile, staff writer Joey Peters appeared on KVSF-FM this week for a discussion of the story, which attempts to explain why New Mexico's economic performance has been so bad this decade.
