Susan Riedel has put criminals behind bars while Hector Balderas is leading the fight against government corruption, the two candidates argue in advertisements in a race to be the state's top law enforcement officer.
The two advertisements reflect the sharp differences between the candidates about the role of the state's attorney general and how their experiences make them better suited for that role.
Riedel, a Republican, is banking on her career in the Third Judicial District, where she worked under Gov. Susana Martinez as a prosecutor and moved on to become a district court judge there. She stresses the crime-fighting role role of the attorney general's office in her ads, saying that criminals will know how to pronounce her name correctly (Reedle).
Democrat Balderas meanwhile is stressing the government oversight role of the attorney general's office in his new ad. As a two-term state auditor he led the fight" against corruption in "every corner in New Mexico."
The two candidates have raised more than $1,178,783 million combined for the race, with Balderas outraising his opponent by more than a 4-to-1 ratio.
