NM Gov. Accepts ALS #IceBucketChallenge

Martinez takes it on the chin for viral charity campaign

August 27, 2014, 5:00 pm

Donatella Versace, Homer Simpson, and now New Mexico Governor Susana Martinez, have all taken part in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge.

Before being doused and sharing the video on her Facekbook page, Martinez challenged her cousin Rosemary from El Paso, Speaker W Ken Martinez and KRQE’s Mark Ronchetti.

Speaker Martinez immediately accepted and shared in his video that his father succumbed to Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, often referred to as Lou Gehrig's Disease, in 1986.

Per the ALS Association’s website, donations thanks to the viral campaign that consists of dumping a bucket of iced water on oneself, have now reached $94.3 million as of Aug. 27.

“The ALS Association has been given a great deal of money and with that comes tremendous responsibility,” said Barbara Newhouse, President and CEO of The ALS Association.

Other notable New Mexicans that have taken part of the widely popular campaign include authors George RR Martin and part-time Tesuque resident Armistead Maupin:
