¡Lucha Libre Coming to Santa Fe!

August 15, 2014, 5:00 pm

escribed as "the wrestler who threw kisses instead of punches," professional luchador Cassandro is in a class all his own.

The brightest star of the "exótico" sub-genre—gender-bending fighters who play up flamboyance and challenge stern gender-normative roles—Cassandro has also been a topic of fascination for Mexico City-based Belgian photographer Annick Donkers.

Since 2012 Donkers has followed Cassandro though wins, loses and health scares, including a recent knee surgery for which a presentation of the photographer's work doubled as a fundraiser to help offset medical bills.

Donkers presents her intimate portraits of the lucha superstar in Santa Fe as part of the AHA Festival of Progressive Arts on Sept. 14.

The evening prior, her muse joins the likes of Estrellita, Diva Salvaje and Niebla Roja in a special one-night-only bout at El Museo Cultural.

"It is very exciting," Donkers tells SFR about the prospect. "It' the first time we bring [the exhibit] outside of Mexico City. It is also a challenge because lots of people are not familiar with lucha libre in Santa Fe; but we are sure they will like it because it will be a great and really fun show."

For the uninitiated, here's Cassandro in action:
