The Z’s Knees

Zozobra goes retro in special event

June 24, 2014, 12:00 am

The year is 1920. The Santa Fe Railway is booming and mad flappers abound. An alleged bootlegger and goatsucker, Mr. Z, is on the loose. This is the preamble for Mr. Z’s Speakeasy, a generational party to take place on Saturday in commemoration of Will Shuster’s assignment of all rights of the giant marionette to the Kiwanis Club.

Tacos, tequila, live entertainment and period costumes are to be expected at the 21 and over event, as well as, well, booze.

Ray Sandoval, Zozobra event committee chair, tells SFR the event’s purpose is double-fold.

“We get to celebrate all the history and culture Zozobra brings but it’s also now time to celebrate all the good Zozobra has done for our community,” he says.

Among those expected to be present, is Diva La Fiesta a “Z Girl” who bares a striking resemblance to the Jewel Box Cabaret’s Madame Marie Antoinette Du Barry.

“A little party never hurt nobody,” La Fiesta says in a perfect ‘20s twang. “After Interpol tried to catch Mr. Z, he’s headed back to Santa Fe and is ready for some boozin’ and taco cruisin’.”

Rouging her knees and rolling her stockings down, she finalizes, “It’s gonna be the Z’s knees.”
