Santa Fe Police Can't Confirm Gunshot Reports

Officers made no contact in responding to pre-dawn calls Saturday in southeast Santa Fe

The Santa Fe Police Department says officers couldn't find the source of reported gunfire early Saturday morning.

Two 911 callers who live within two miles of each other in southeast Santa Fe reported the sounds around 4 am, but police Lt. Louis Carlos tells SFR that officers who responded to locations off Camino Lumbre and Calle de Oriente "didn't find anything."

Calle de Oriente is located near Nava Elementary School and General Franklin E Miles Park. Camino Lumbre intersects with Galisteo Road near Candelero Park.

Because officers made no contact with anyone, they couldn't determine whether the noises were gunshots or fireworks, says Carlos.

One local woman wrote in an email to media outlets that she was the source of one emergency calls. She says others, including her mother who lives down the street, heard the shots.

Police Chief Ray Rael retired as the city's top cop in March. Mayor Javier Gonzales says the he's narrowed the search for a new chief to four contenders.
