Comedy show brings local politics front and center

January 29, 2014, 12:00 am

Nan Elsasser thinks the bulk of local politicians should be shaking in their boots.

Not because of the current legislative session or the impending mayor’s race, but because it’s time for Working Classroom—an Albuquerque-based multi-generational artistic community, which Elsasser helms—to stage their annual Roundhouse Comedy Revue.

A “good natured evening of skits” directed by Meggan Gomez, the revue is known to not pull any punches in its treatment of the movers and shakers of New Mexico’s political circle.

“We started with a reprise of ‘Oh! Susana (Won’t You Drive for Me?)’ and a debate among the democratic candidates for governor and added skits as the stories unfolded,” Elsasser says of the genesis of this year’s show.

The program, she says, also includes parodies of Grease, Duck Dynasty, and a thrilling rendition of a Beatles-inspired “I Believe (in Obamacare).”

She advances former New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson and current New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie both have show-stealing moments.

Still, Elsasser says, the skits are all meant in good fun. “The show is not malicious,” she clarifies. “It’s lighthearted…with a few barbs.”

“To laugh,” she responds when asked what audiences can expect from the evening. “And to be impressed with the comedic skills of a troupe of young actors.”
