Babies Killin’ Babies

It’s a ‘Battle Royale.’ Get me a chicken burrito!

January 15, 2014, 12:00 am
Some time ago, roughly when The Hunger Games hit theaters in early 2012, there was some brouhaha over whether it actively steals from Battle Royale. For more on that argument, please see io9’s comparison Did The Hunger Games really rip off Battle Royale?

Then ask yourself why you have enough time to consider whether The Hunger Games rips off Battle Royale.

In the interim, if you’d like to see children murder each other—only with horrifically graphic violence that’s tough to take even for someone who likes some good old-fashioned killin’—Royale is the movie for you.

Sometime in Japan’s not-too-distant future, classrooms of school kids are rounded up, taken to a mysterious location, given weapons, and then told they have to kill each other.

The winner’s prize? Not dying.

Battle Royale takes such glee in being perverse that it’s difficult to take any of what is happening on screen seriously. That said, around the time you see a kid’s head explode because he tries to remove a tracking device on his person, you may change your mind. If that kind of thing is your cup of tea, enjoy.

If you’re given to, say, not watching children murder each other with gruesome savagery, stay away.
