Oh, Christmas Tree

January 2, 2014, 12:00 am
The presents are unwrapped, the tourists are leaving, the holidays have come and gone. Another year, another tree that you trekked miles (or braved the tree lot) for. Assuming it survived the festivities, chances are your tree’s days as decoration are waning. So, now what? Instead of dragging it to the curb and waiting for it to disappear (which is not going to happen), do your part and turn that sad sap-sponge into useful mulch at one of Santa Fe’s free tree-recycling centers. With more than 30 million “real” trees annually sold on a national average, locally, the initiative provides the city parks with needed landscaping material and erosion control, and will also be available to the public for free in the Franklin Miles parking lot. Un-flocked and de-ornamented trees are accepted at the following locations through Jan. 26: Buckman Road Recycling and Transfer Station (2600 Buckman Road), Franklin Miles Park (Camino Carlos Rey and Siringo Road) Frank Ortiz Park (Camino de Vista and Buckman Road), Eldorado, Jacona and Stanley county Transfer Stations, Newman’s Nursery (7501 Cerillos Road) and both Payne’s Nursery locations (Camino Alire and St. Michael’s Drive). Select locations are also accepting unwanted Christmas lights for recycling. For more information visit santaferecycling.org. (Alexa Mangrum)
