Not Enough

‘Enough Said’ is delightful

October 1, 2013, 12:00 am
It’s a shame there aren’t more movies like Enough Said. It’s a touching (and truly hilarious) comedy with moments of drama about people who are actual adults—people with children and responsibilities and jobs—and not just assholes who work in graphic design.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus is wonderful as Eva, a divorced mother and massage therapist who has had trouble meeting men that she likes enough to go out with more than once. Her equal is James Gandolfini as Albert, who has a similar problem. In fact, they meet at a party and claim not to be attracted to each other, but Albert gets Eva’s number from a friend and she goes out with him. To her surprise, she has a great time.

If you’ve seen the trailer, you know that Eva ends up treating Albert’s ex-wife, Marianne (Catherine Keener), and that causes trouble. The trouble is predictable and the results are, too, but the movie has such a pleasant and easygoing time getting there, it doesn’t much matter. Watching Enough Said is like watching a movie about a good, goofy friend and hoping it works out for her. Louis-Dreyfus cements the idea that she can do any type of comedy, and Gandolfini is utterly charming and real.
