Santa Fe's first day of issuing same-sex marriage licenses in 30 moving pictures

August 23, 2013, 4:00 pm
"I'm signing this one myself," Santa Fe County Clerk Geraldine Salazar said on Friday afternoon as she took the marriage license of Yon Hudson and Alex Hanna and made it official. The couple had been denied a license last June and had since filed a challenge in state District Court.

"We're going to wait for [same -sex marriage] to be [available] statewide,I think," Hudson told SFR when asked about the big day. Beaming, his partner intervened: "It's awesome huh?"

Upstairs, Santa Fe County Commissioner Liz Stefanics and her partner of over 20 years, Linda Siegle—a lobbyist for Equality New Mexico— couldn't wait. With a little under two hours of planning, and in front of only a few friends, the pair was the first same-sex couple to be legally married in the nation's oldest capital.

Salazar put it succinctly: "Now is the time to right the wrongs of hundreds of years of oppression."

Here are 30 moving shots from that first hour of marriage equality in Santa Fe:
