Burger’s End

Iconic roadside restaurant, Sugar’s BBQ, for sale

August 6, 2013, 12:00 am
Anyone familiar with the road to Taos has at least seen Sugar’s BBQ & Burgers, the sprawling compound along Hwy. 68, which on most afternoons emanates the rich smell of meat on a grill. For everyone from tourists to raft guides and wine aficionados, the low-key roadside café—named for the sweet old bulldog who used to loll around on the property—has been a mainstay for 14 years. It’s particularly known for the “Sugar burger,” a smorgasbord of beef, lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle, mayonnaise, cheese, green chile, bacon and mushrooms piled so high it’s virtually impossible to eat without getting it all over your face. (Perhaps that’s why they make you eat outside, on rustic picnic tables.) But it’s the end of an era: Sugar’s is officially for sale, as owners Nancy and Neil Nobles are ready to retire. “I’m 70 and my husband’s 72, and we’re ready to retire. Simple as that,” Nancy tells SFR. Though it’ll be a sad day for the many fans of Sugar’s down-home cooking, the Nobleses promise to stick around and pass on a few of their recipes if the next owners want it. “This place has so many possibilities,” Nancy says. “There’s so much somebody could do with it—if they were younger.”
