Você Fala Português?

June 25, 2013, 12:00 am
Portland, Ore., rock quintet Portugal. The Man has officially transcended flash-in-the-pan status thanks to their latest, Evil Friends.

Produced by Brian Burton (Danger Mouse!), Friends finds them foraying into the wilderness of extreme variety. Indeed, there is something for everyone—fans of indie rock, countrified acoustic beauty or club-thumpin’ dance-pop—but John Gourley and crew manage to stay focused.

It’s tricky to incorporate so many styles into a cohesive work, but PtM has done so wonderfully and, despite the high probability Friends will fly under the radar, they’ve crafted a wonderful tribute to popular music while sticking to the indie roots that make ’em so popular with those in the know. NYC act Guards opens and reminds us that the alternative rock of the early ’90s was fine...damn fine.

Portugal. The Man:
7 pm Tuesday, July 2.
$21-$25, Santa Fe Sol,
37 Fire Place, 474-7322
