Slinging Dirt

In Brief

Julia Goldberg
BRIEFSWEB

Democrats clearly noticed Republican candidate Tom Mullins’ recent surprise strong showing in his race against Democratic incumbent Ben Ray Luján in New Mexico’s 3rd Congressional District.

A new website launched this week, whoistommullins.com, takes aim at the first-time candidate, a self-proclaimed conservative Christian. The website’s header: Tom Mullins’ Dark Vision for America, rests atop an ominous video mash-up of Mullins’ now famous call for placing land mines on the border (an idea Mullins has since said he does not advocate). A Public Policy Polling poll released last month for The Daily Kos website showed Luján with just a 6 percent lead in the Democrat-heavy district.

Mullins visited SFR last week for a candidate endorsement interview (Luján came in the week before) and left us with a complimentary copy of the Constitution. Mullins also made an author recommendation (Orson Scott Card) to SFR’s sci-fi-loving editor and acknowledged it’s not the first time his resemblance to Happy Days actor-turned-director Ron Howard has been mentioned.

On the political front, Mullins tells SFR his poll numbers haven’t garnered him any financial support from the Republican Party for his race. “Good luck with that,” is how he describes the message he’s received from the Republican powers that be. SFR’s endorsements for the Nov. 2 ballot will be published in our Oct. 27
edition.

How is it slinging dirt if these are all things that wako Tea Bagger has said himself. The problem with the press is that you let these guys off the hook when they present dangerous ideas that are going to hurt people.

First this Mullins character said he wanted to landmine the border and now you guys are letting him get away with it by suggesting he doesnt advocate for that idea anymore. ANYMORE? That's not a valid reason to let this guy say and do and say whatever he wants. Thats like letting someone off the hook for saying they're not "racist anymore".

The point here is that these Tea Party candidates are forcing our country so far to the right its down right scary, and without the press to call them out on their crazy ideas you are letting them continue to creep amongst the electorate in sheep's clothing. When has land mining the border ever been acceptable amongst any electorate? Maybe in North Korea.... but then again, they dont get a chance to vote.

Would the Santa Fe Reporter start doing their job and call these Tea Party types out on their crazy BS?

Janie is right.  You said something in a campaign and then you retract it because the polling says that people don't like it.  This is something ("put landmines on the border") that he may of said off the cuff, but it really shows his darkest character and unfitness for public office.  He is just too extreme for the CD-3.  He might fit in Alabama and Mississippi who recently polled at over 45% saying that Obama is a Muslim and 35% saying they are not sure what he is (80%? yikes).  Not sure what the polling results were for: "being a Black man in the WHITE House should be illegal" was......
