Best Male Vocalist

Gentlemen, Start Your Engine

By Alex De Vore

1 Alex Maryol
You’ll never guess who won Best Male Vocalist and Best Rock Band this year, Santa Fe. It’s a pretty big surprise…on opposite day! I’m talking, of course, about Alex Maryol. No Way! You’ve proven year after year that you can’t get enough of this guy.

The band had a soft release of a brand-new CD this past May. Face The Day is a great record and proves you can’t pigeonhole this guy as just a blues musician. “It’s basically about the culmination of the last five or 10 years of my life,” Maryol says. “A lot has happened, you know?” The album is all over the map and moves from blissful pop to downright emotional (not emo, though…that would be gross). Maryol is switching gears for the future of his band. No longer content to play every other day, Maryol, drummer Andy Primm and bassist Will Magee are taking a step back to reassess their situation. “I’m getting more into playing for quality as opposed to quantity,” Maryol says.

Fewer shows mean more excitement when we do get a chance to check out the band, and that is never a bad thing. With a strong new record and the support of the city, Maryol will no doubt be rocking us for years to come.
