 to Get into Gear

In 1994, Kent Little moved to Santa Fe and opened a climbing-oriented store to combine his experience in retail management with his love for the outdoors. Today, Sangre de Cristo Mountain Works provides reliable products to hikers, skiers, snowshoers, climbers, boaters and just about anyone else who loves to be outside. In addition to its expansive inventory, Little says, “We have an increased level of customer service surrounded by superior products—and whether we have it or not, we’ll find it for you”—even if this means sending the customer to one of its competitors. In the face of big-box outdoor-gear retailers slowly encroaching upon its turf, SDCMW remains steadfast in its resolve to be the best. “We’ve been ingrained in this community for over 15 years and we’re interested in the community itself, rather than getting money from the community,” Little says. Whether one needs moisture-wicking socks or a carabiner, it can all be found here.
