Wise Fool takes its clowning around seriously. The group, which moved to Santa Fe from San Francisco in 1999, does more than just perform mind- and body-bending stunts; it teaches others to play too. From stilts to aerials to puppets to trapeze and more, Wise Fool breaks down the barriers of normal entertainment.
“For kids—well, adults too—almost everything they see is digital,” Amy Christian, co-founder and co-artistic director, tells SFR. “What we do lures them in with things that are delicious and candy-like, then we use that to really talk about real issues.”
In addition to camps for kids and adults, Wise Fool spends the year preparing for its always-popular fall show Circus Luminous, which features music and stage performances by a variety of members of the community. For Christian, Wise Fool isn’t made up of just a few select performers. “Because Wise Fool is a conglomeration of a lot of different voices, it taps into a lot of things that people are looking for,” she says.
