A news team comprised of a dozen volunteers and one fully paid staff member, with less money in its budget than you can find in some couches, does not set its sights on winning awards. And, yet, KSFR News, Santa Fe’s community radio station, consistently wins high praise and awards for its commitment to reporting local news. “When we were starting in 2002, our key objective was to put an emphasis on local news and create a community radio station that Santa Fe could be proud of. That’s been our objective ever since, and by now we have well over 18,000 newscasts, at 12 a day, five days a week, 52 weeks a year,” Bill Dupuy, KSFR’s news director, says proudly, emphasizing KSFR’s commitment to seeking out its own information by refusing to use un-cited sources in newscasts. “I question everything,” he says. “In the end, all we have is truth and integrity. And if you mess up, you’ve got to say ‘Whoops! I’m sorry!’ That’s the business.” As for winning, Dupuy feels great. “We’re very gratified and proud. We exist for only one reason—that’s to serve people. And we try to serve them well.”
