SHORT AND SWEET

Don’t just rot your brain online.

Patricia Sauthoff
Zygote in my coffee
You know that angry guy in the cubicle next to you, the one everyone makes Office Space jokes about? He’s not actually thinking about killing you on Thursday, he’s probably thinking something more along the lines of what the writers at Zygote In My Coffee are saying. This site includes rants about television and the people who claim to hate it, poems that lack the emotional quality usually associated with poetry and helpful tips on how to get writing again after tragedy—from some of the most bitter folks out there. This site is not for the timid; the profanity and violent ideas fly. Honestly, the writers here are not going to be the next Ernest Hemingway—or the next Jackie Collins for that matter—but Zygote In My Coffee says the things we all want to say. After all, at the end of the day, we’re all Miltons.

Eyeshot
Speculation reigns at Eyeshot. From the humorous and long-winded “An Interpretation of, and Pronunciation Guide For, REO Speedwagon’s 1980 hit ‘Keep On Lovin’ You’” to a dialogue between Franz Kafka and a couple of drunk co-eds spending a semester in Prague, reality simply falls away. Sometimes the writing reads like well-written Craigslist ads, other times it reads like the e-mails forwarded by a crazy college friend. Still,  it can’t be denied that all of it is creative. Readers looking for something different from all the online news and social networking that goes on during the work day will find a great escape and an easy excuse for slacking.

East of the web
Sarcasm and bitterness are fine, but sometimes a good short story can be captivating. East of the Web offers writers of crime fiction, horror, humor and hyperfiction an outlet that’s a little more refined than some of the other Web sites out there. Page length and reader ratings provide a good indication of how involved a reader needs to be with each story.
