REPUGNANT PUG

The dog-humping-the-valentine cover [

] reconfirms what seems to be expressed on your Letters page almost every week: While we're all getting older, the seemingly intentional F-you, aren't-we-hip attitude of the SF Reporter seems to be getting more pronounced.

It's too bad, because the paper always contains some good stuff.

DOCENT DEFENSE

In the interest of truth in advertising, I admit I am a docent in the New Mexico museums system and would like to correct some stereotypes in Zane's review of the Sherrie Levine show at the Georgia O'Keeffe museum [Zane's World, Jan. 31: "

"].

My remarks have nothing to do with his critique of the show but rather with his tirade against what he calls "art education." Many viewers who are not as highly educated as Zane actually benefit from information the museums supply either in the form of docent tours, audio tours or placards placed next to the artworks. No one is forcing Zane to join a tour, rent an audio tape or even read the placard. If Zane stumbled upon a tour in progress, he could have avoided it by moving into another gallery.

He also implies that docents are not well educated. I take issue with that. Both the Georgia O'Keeffe docents and the docents of the New Mexico museums system have a yearlong program of intense education in general art history as well as in art of the Southwest and of particular artists highlighted by their respective museums. They must keep abreast of changing exhibits and participate in study groups during the year. The description of docents as pasty-faced old ladies who would rather be quilting is a stereotype both untrue and insulting.

So Zane, if you don't want to use the resources available to you at the museums, don't. But don't denigrate them either unless you have better ideas for informing the patrons.

FOODIE CRITIQUE

I guess that you call your food writer a "Total Pig" should be our first clue that her palate is less than highly developed. Supporting evidence lies in that she doesn't know what a financier is-perhaps the most classic French cake [Total Pig, Jan. 31: "

"].

By trashing chef Rios and the Anasazi, she proved herself to be a complete ignoramus. A "dumbed-down menu"? "Soft and mushy crab cakes"? I can't tell you how many times I've eaten those crab cakes, not to mention hundreds of others, and I, along with many, know them to be the best, bar none.

Today's trend in restaurants is to reinvent classic dishes, such as the Reuben Gwyneth maligns, and for menus to sound simple and deliver much more. I hardly read the Reporter or its food reviews, but I'm guessing since this paper is a freebie, the most favorable reviews are for restaurants that advertise.

Thanks for the biased, unwarranted attack on my favorite restaurant and chef. If your readers want some real culinary advice, they should check out the Anasazi and see why they really call Gwyneth Doland the Total Pig and chef Rios the best chef in New Mexico!

NOT FOR THE KIDS?

I don't think that Richard Polese got into the school board for the sake of the children [Election 2007, Jan. 31: "

"]. I think he's in there to continue turning Santa Fe on its head by joining the District 2 councilors in their attempt to separate the district from the rest of Santa Fe.

A big part of the reason for the less-than-lackadaisical voter turnout is that eggheads usually get chosen. It's been happening for too long now, and I doubt it will improve, given the superfluous people infiltrating Santa Fe. Our city has become nothing more than dog poop on a silver platter! The politicians in District 2 are the reason a lot of people don't vote-who wants to put up with tyrants!
