National Month Month

National Month Month

Hey look. It's June. It's National LGBTQ+ Pride Month. And National Candy Month. And National Dairy Month. And National Fresh Fruit and Vegetables Month. It's also National Accordion Awareness Month. And each of those is awesome.

This week we'd like to honor Margarethe Cammermeyer, an important figure in LGBTQ+ rights. A colonel in the Washington National Guard for 25 years, Cammermeyer was discharged after answering a question about her sexuality in 1992. She sued, and in 1994 won a landmark case against the US military. She was reinstated and served until her retirement in 1997. A movie about her case, Serving in Silence, came out in 1995 and starred Glenn Close.

Let's FORK!

Santa Fe's Whole Foods is one of the lucky 11 stores in the country to get a new taco bar. The taqueria is part of a test to see about adding the option nationwide. It will sell tacos, burritos and tortas.

As part of the new food offering, they have partnered with Austin-based Siete Foods to supply the taco bars with grain-free and gluten-free tortillas. The tortillas are made from cassava and coconut and are available for both tacos and burritos.

Stop by and give your feedback on this interesting opportunity to shape Whole Foods' offerings.

It being National Fresh Fruit and Vegetables Month is reason enough to also think about the amount of waste created when cooking or preparing these foods. Jeremy Fox has a great recipe for carrot juice cavatelli that uses EVERY PART of the carrot. Check out the recipe on the James Beard Foundation's website.

See you next week,
Michael
