Plague Cases Spike
New Mexico is seeing a spike in plague cases this summer. Health officials say there have been 10 cases of plague and 19 cases of tularemia in dogs and cats in the state so far this year.

Subpoena Fight Looms in Griego Case
Steve Terrell reports, “The state Legislative Council Service is asking a judge to nullify all subpoenas issued to legislators and legislative staff members in the corruption case of former state senator Phil Griego.”
State Attorney General Hector Balderas criticized the maneuver Monday, saying it “sacrifices justice on the altar of secrecy.”

Lawyers for the council service, which, among other duties, keeps records for the Legislature, say that forcing lawmakers to testify about Griego and an ethics violation that led to his abrupt resignation in 2015 would violate a part of the New Mexico Constitution that “exists to protect the independence of the Legislature” and to “preserve the integrity of the legislative process.”

Governor Announces 200 New Jobs
As New Mexico continues to wrestle with the highest unemployment rate in the nation, Gov. Susana Martinez is using incentives to lure jobs to the state. Yesterday, she announced the addition more than 200 sales positions by a California-based company that provides computer equipment, software and services in Rio Rancho.

Chinese and American officials are launching a new film and media partnership in New Mexico. Panda iMedia, a Beijing-based digital media firm, promises job growth, expanded opportunity and cross-cultural understanding between the two countries.

Rescue Welcomes Feral Horses
Orphaned feral horses are now getting the care they need at a rescue center set up to take care of wolves and dogs near Jackson Lake, north of Farmington.
