Cover, Dec. 2: “Loves Me Not”

No Longer a Statistic

Thank you for your article on domestic violence. It hit me from the moment I saw the cover walking to the Wok restaurant with my then-boyfriend of three years. I had been stuck in an emotionally abusive relationship. In October 2013, we had our last physically abusive outburst, and I was arrested for protecting myself. I pleaded out to a lower charge and somehow remained in the relationship for another two years...

However, when I saw last week's cover, I felt something, and once I read the article, I knew I had to end it. I finally walked away. The article made it very clear to me that even if the physical abuse had subsided, the way I was feeling emotionally wouldn't. The controlling emotional abuse was not letting my wounds heal.

It never mattered what other people told me about my relationship; it just felt like they were against me and us. However, this article allowed me to be alone with the truth and to decide for myself if I wanted to be part of that statistic.

Dump the DVDs

It's fine that Santa Fe has two film festivals back-to-back, and both the SFFF and the SFIFF had excellent programs this year that hopefully contributed to their success. However, both festivals should immediately declare a moratorium on screening DVDs for their revival showings. At the SFIFF's tribute to Gena Rowlands, a DVD of Gloria that screened at the Violet Crown was so dark and murky, it was almost invisible, and the SFFF screened a regular DVD of Peter Bogdanovich's The Last Picture Show that was similarly dim and fuzzy, as well as being in the 4:3 TV aspect ratio and having virtually unintelligible sound.

Film festivals have a responsibility to the filmmakers and their audiences to put a good-quality representation of the film up on the screen.

In these sad days where no one runs 35mm prints anymore, festivals should at least hold out for a studio [Digital Cinema Package] or a Blu-Ray and make sure their venues have the proper equipment to run them to their best advantage.
