with Shay Nikole Lara y Mares

Twenty-year-old Shay Nikole Lara y Mares knows what’s up. As the current Fiestas de Santa Fe queen, the SFCC student recognizes the value of tradition and looks ahead. SFR spoke to La Reina in between school visitations, prior to this week’s chockfull Fiesta schedule.

When did you become aware of the meaning of Fiestas and La Reina?
I was a part of Baile Español for 16 years, so I kind up grew up around it, performing every year for Fiestas. I became aware of La Reina during all the school visitations—whenever the council would come and visit us—that's how I became aware that there was a Reina.

How did you prepare in order to become La Reina?
It was kind of a long process. It was more mentally preparing myself for public speaking, because that was one of my biggest fears. Also, reciting my Spanish and practicing my speeches to make sure that what was in my heart was said in them.

What would you say to those who either are not aware of La Reina or think the whole concept is obsolete?
I would say that it's always going to be part of our culture, it's always going to be part of our history, and it's a great thing to take part in. Our Fiestas have been going on for 303 years, and it's something that I strongly feel we should continue. I don't ever think that it should be something that goes out of style. I would tell members of our community that this is part of our culture and heritage, so never let that go.
