with Madame Marie Antoinette Du Barry

Just as the French are glad to die for love, local drag fixture Madame Du Barry, the subject of a recent LA Times profile, will be elated to entertain those in attendance at this Friday’s Drenched in Diamonds. The “extravaganza” is designed to benefit her attempt to snatch the coveted Miss New Mexico Pride crown. For disclosure’s sake, the author is a friend of the character’s progenitor, Paul Valdez, but not Du Barry. She’s a loner.

How would you describe Santa Fe's drag scene?
I would describe it as eclectic, different and delicious.

What do you hope to accomplish if you win the crown?
I would like to bring awareness to youth that are made homeless because of their sexual orientation, through Casa Q, which is an Albuquerque safe house for gay, lesbian, transgender and bi youth that are kicked out of their house. This issue is important to me, because I had a wonderful family that took care of me growing up, and I can't imagine not having that in my life.

Finally, what can the audience expect from the event?
People can expect impersonations—there's gonna be a Janet Jackson impersonation, there's gonna be wonderful costumes, great get-up-and-wanna-dance music, glitter, fabulosity and big eyelashes.
