News, July 8: “Protect & Pray”

Cult Worship

This was ridiculous. Spending money on protecting the leader of a cult.

Don’t See the Big Deal

I'm a Christian, and I do understand the need for security in these days. However, people really shouldn't complain; church goers are citizens too. I see the police guarding elsewhere, so I don't see the big deal here. It does seem like a lot of money though.

We don't need to get on this religious bandwagon. Church goers, as I said, are citizens too, and these are cruel days.

Let it be.

Born Here, July 8: Talking About the Gun

Halfway to the Truth

I agree with you that the American image abroad is certainly tainted by our denial about our own responsibility to moderate our consumption, our behavior and to pay closer attention to the perspectives of other cultures.

I think this is the same denial that enables so many of us to continue to nurture the belief that guns will keep us, our children and loved ones from harm and will make us the bad-ass country that no one dares to mess with. So, after many generations of thinking that way, how's that going for us?

Those people you describe talking about their freedom from government and terrorist threats are a big part of who the NRA's political arm is comprised of, and they are powerful.

And the senseless acts of violence and terror are largely perpetrated by people with some form of psychosis, often on serious medication, that should never have had access to a gun but, let's admit it, guns are everywhere. So when you say it's the person, not the gun, you're only half right.
