News, June 17: “Home Stay”

A Way to Connect

[AirBnB] is not about a less expensive way to travel. It's about wanting to connect. As a society we are feeling a loss of connection, and AirBnB offers a way to connect that hotel just doesn't offer. When I know my travel will be too busy to connect I stay at a hotel. I agree with Vicki, I like being connected to the place I am traveling in an deeper, meaningful way, NOT as a tourist.

How Do They Like It?

Hmm. Wonder how Santa Fe businesses paying Santa Fe business taxes feel about Santa Fe businesses not paying Santa Fe business taxes.

Calendar, June 10: “Art Garfunkel at Lensic”

Was That Garfunkel?

We went to see Art Garfunkle in the historic Lensic theater. The event was billed as "An Intimate Evening with Art Garfunkle." We looked at the stage. No one was recognizable but a hunched little bald man holding a mike, and a younger guitar player who looked like Graham Nash 40 years ago. Could this be Garfunkle? It was. He looked all of his 75 years, and he began his act by reading his prose poetry.

"Stay with me," he said. Reading memoir pieces, he explained that he had lost his vocal chords. He suffered from paresis, which is a paralysis of his voice. He could no longer sing. But, he said, "I will try. Thank you so much for allowing me to be brave and to recover."

Finally, he sang "Bridge Over Troubled Water." He couldn't reach the high notes. We held our collective breath as he tried and tried to reach pitch. It was like the little train that could. We thought, You can do it...can you do it? He almost did, but not quite.

The audience gave him a standing ovation.

The experience reminded us of how old we were getting. The person on the stage could be any one of us...explaining who he used to be but wasn't anymore.

We left the theater feeling so sad. We agreed that he shouldn't be performing.
