Letters, April 1: “Chappelle Banana Incident”

Let Cholos Handle It

I'm for giving Christian England and his banana stunts the benefit of the doubt. I don't believe that he's racist, consciously or otherwise. I believe that he's merely a self-absorbed clueless hipster twit and a normal part of the Santa Fake, SanFran, Seattle, etc. landscape. I suggest that we encourage him to "ironically" throw a banana peel at a group of cholos or outlaw bikers and let nature run its course.

Not Easy Being Green

Wasting water figures highly in addressing water issues, but ratepayer data leaves out the underlying causes of water crises: social attitudes toward water and ecosystems, lifestyles and values, civil infrastructure and design, and climate change. New Mexico's food producers' reckless attitude toward water stems from their emphasis on growing cattle and dairy instead of watering food plants directly.

Suburban sprawl has replaced water-retentive soils with asphalt and single-family properties with yards now too big for homeowners to manage. Many have [been] reduced to hot, treeless hardscapes or simply dirtscapes. We are all living wrong, and there are too many of us.

Santa Fe is not sustainable or "green." We have built cities dependent on individualized transportation filled with willing consumers of a throwaway society, and all that energy to make it run takes and pollutes far more water than keeping up a pleasant little yard with a tall, beautiful shade tree, bushes and buffalo grass. Contests to see who can survive on the least water usage are in vain. Simply adapting to less water will fail.

Website, April 9: “Pocket-Sized Booze Bottles Get the Boot”

Wasting Time

I think they have better things to waste time on! Now there will be large bottles littered. Install more trash receptacles?
