Cover, Feb. 25: “Obamacareless”

Nothing New

Calling it Obamacare is silly. It's the same model Richard Nixon created years ago. That's some idiotic buzz word. Nice to see you guys all over it.

They ‘Forgot’

Wow, reminds me of what Texas did to the blacks. They forgot to tell them they were free.

Born Here, Feb. 18: “Missing the Point”

Colonial Racism

Thank you for saying what really needed to be said in your article "Missing the Point." There's another angle to this too, which often gets left out of the discussion, perhaps because it would reveal too much. The people coming up from Mexico and South America are largely indigenous, with ancestors going back on this side of the world for at least 10,000 years. It's incredibly asinine for groups of people who have been here for

a minute to say that these indigenous people don't belong. It's even worse when one hears bigotry coming out of the mouths of people who also clearly have a significant amount of indigenous ancestry, yet disavow it. Colonial brainwashing at its finest...

Whether one calls an indigenous person a "savage" or an "illegal," both terms that never existed here until colonization, the result seems to be the same—dehumanization and disenfranchisement. The very recent immigration rules that exist today, and the hateful attitudes that accompany them, did not come out of a vacuum, but have historical ties to bigotry and exploitation. We all need to demand change for the better. Discrimination should not become a time-honored tradition.

News, Feb. 25: “Clean Sweep”

Correction

SFR incorrectly reported that the Solid Waste Management Agency board voted to increase tipping fees during its Feb. 19 meeting. The board discussed the fees that the agency charges to customers, like the city, that dump waste in the Caja Del Rio Landfill.
