New Mexico Reports 4,000th Death from COVID-19

New cases today number 264, health secretary warns state is not out of the woods

Deaths from COVID-19 in New Mexico crossed the threshold of 4,000 today, state health officials reported.

Four additional deaths reported in Bernalillo, Cibola, Doña Ana and Rio Arriba counties take the state to a total of 4,001 deaths so far.

“Today’s sad milestone reminds us of what we have been through as a state and as a country. This is not just another number—they are our neighbors, our fellow New Mexicans. We grieve for them and their families. It also underscores the need for us to remain cautious in the weeks and months ahead,” said DOH Secretary Dr. Tracie Collins in a statement. “While New Mexico is leading the nation in vaccinations and staying vigilant with COVID-safe practices, we are not out of the woods. There is still much work still to be done. We need to remain vigilant if we are going to beat COVID.”

New Mexico health officials today reported 264 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the statewide total so far to 194,868 COVID-19 cases, of which the department designates 176,357 as having recovered.

Currently, 53.3% of New Mexicans have had at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine and 37.3% are fully vaccinated. In Santa Fe County, 57% have had at least one dose and 36.8% are fully inoculated.
