New Mexico Reports 2,080 New COVID-19 Cases

The state also announced 33 more deaths, including two from Santa Fe County

New Mexico health officials today reported 2,080 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the statewide total so far to 104,935. The health department has designated 35,781 of those as recovered.

Bernalillo County had 755 new cases, followed by Doña Ana County with 224 and Sandoval County with 118. Santa Fe County had 96 new cases today and the city's Southside 87507 did not appear on the top 10 ZIP codes for new cases as it has nearly all week (except for Nov. 30). The state also reported 68 cases among New Mexico Corrections Department inmates spread across nine different facilities.

While the state's latest epidemiology report indicates case rates and rates of transmission have dropped somewhat in the last week, it also notes such data "should be interpreted cautiously in the face of high percent positivity and the recent Thanksgiving holiday," the results from which are not likely to emerge until at least next week given the two-week lag time before cases manifest.

Moreover, the daily number of deaths have been high and hospitalizations have been generally increased.

Today, the state also announced 33 additional deaths, including two from Santa Fe County: a woman in her 90s who was hospitalized and a man in his 90s who was a resident of the Pacifica Senior Living facility in Santa Fe. There have now been 40 deaths in Santa Fe County and 1,706 statewide.

Fatalities this week, which included yesterday's record high of 44 have fallen closer to the forecasted number of deaths in the state's most recent modeling and forecasting report.

As of today, 934 people are hospitalized with COVID-19, a slight decrease from yesterday's record high of 947.*

The environment department reports 174 New Mexico establishments on its daily watchlist for places with two or more positive COVID-19 cases among employees–a nearly 27% decrease from one week ago. In Santa Fe County, 14 places appear on the list, including Sam's Club with nine rapid responses. However, Sam's Club remains open as its parent company Walmart has signed an agreement with the state available to essential businesses that allows it to avoid closures by committing to testing employees and participating in contact tracing. Chick-fil-A, with five cases, remains closed through Dec. 15. Other locations in Santa Fe have had two cases each: Albertsons on Zafarano; Cafe Castro; McDonald's on Airport Road; the Netflix production of The Harder They Come; Olive Garden; Smith's Food & Drug on Cerrillos Road; State Employees Credit Union on St. Michael's Drive; Walmart on Cerrillos Road; Wood's Design; Santa Fe High School; and Santa Fe Public Schools Transportation Department on Yucca.
