New Mexico COVID-19 Cases: 13,727

Health Department reports 221 new cases and four more deaths

New Mexico health officials today reported 221 new positive tests for COVID-19—32 fewer than yesterday—bringing the total number of cases statewide thus far to 13,727.

Bernalillo County had, by far, the most new cases reported today: 88 of them. San Juan County had 34 and Doña Ana County, which had 85 new cases yesterday, was down to 24 new ones today.

Santa Fe County had eight new cases for the third day in a row and has now had 283 cases, of which 143 have been designated by the health department as recovered.

Statewide, as of today, 133 people are hospitalized and the health department has designated 5,986 COVID-19 cases as recovered.*

The state also announced four new deaths from Bernalillo, McKinley and San Juan counties; there have been 519 fatalities all together. A complete listing of new cases, fatalities and statewide figures is available at the end of this story.

Today's COVID-19 figures arrived shortly after Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham signed the Small Business Recovery Act of 2020, which allocates $400 million from the state's $5 billion Severance Tax Permanent Fund for loans to small New Mexico businesses and nonprofits, as well as nearly $50 million for loans to local governments. The New Mexico Finance Authority will administer the program.

Additionally, the state Human Services Department announced today it will mail out this week $67 million in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits to approximately 168,000 New Mexico families whose children receive free or reduced-price lunch at school. The benefits will be issued on Pandemic Electronic Benefit Transfer cards in the name of the oldest child in each household. The program falls under the federal Families First Coronavirus Response Act, which provides assistance to families with children who are eligible for free or reduced-price school meals.
