Voyages of Discovery
Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution toppled long-standing pillars of convention. Formulated concurrently with the musical masterpieces of Felix Mendelssohn, Darwin’s theories forged expansion in the realm of science while Mendelssohn impressed royalty with his prodigious, yet conservative musical compositions. Born 200 years ago and only nine days apart, the paths the men’s lives took are similar as well. Together, Medelssohn and Darwin sculpted a new post-Romantic age of progressive exploration. In honor of the impact still felt centuries later, the Santa Fe Symphony Orchestra and the Santa Fe Institute invoke the innovators’ spirits with the music of Mendelssohn, played by the SFSO. Mendelssohn and Darwin’s letters are read by author and producer Kirk Ellis and journalist Jonathan Richards; SFO Music Director Steven Smith and Santa Fe Institute Faculty Chairman David Krakauer provide commentary.
