Slow Thirds
Terri Rolland’s acrylic paintings are conscious—not literally, of course, but by nature of their concept and creation. Flat, angular forms pattern her canvases asymmetrically. In Rolland’s approach, maintaining the pieces’ deliberate progress and rhythm is integral, even during the starts and stops of creation. It is this mindfulness that parallels the Slow Food movement, one of Rolland’s inspirations. The Slow Food movement, a push for local, conscious eating, influenced Rolland to conceive of a “slow art” movement with similar principles that takes into account the origins, materials and time invested in a work of art. For Slow Thirds, Rolland has downsized her canvases—mostly triptychs—honoring the idea of simplicity and prudence. This isn’t just another pretty face in the world of art exhibits; this is art of gravity and substance. Rolland tells SFR of Slow Thirds, “I’ve managed to paint something I can’t say.” The show is the first exhibit at Linda Durham Contemporary Art’s new location, which is sure to become a hub of cutting-edge art much like the gallery has been for 32 years.
