Sherwin Bitsui Reading
A poet’s perception reminds us of the unseen truths that swing in the balance of life. Our estrangement from the tangible world is remedied with the thoughts and imagery of a poet’s work. For Sherwin Bitsui, this practice is his purpose. Bitsui presents his second book, Flood Song, a book-length poem. As a poet, Bitsui strives to reconcile the melding of his traditional Diné upbringing with his modern worldly identity. As he explained to SFR [Cover story, Aug. 12: “Native Tongues”], “…in the Americas, with Native people, there is a connection reaching out to a different time and place.” This connection is pervasive in Bitsui’s work but not overbearing. Earthly references spar with urban revelations, and descriptions of both achieve harmony in the lines of his poems. (Amy Kuhre)
