Jim Hightower

Political activist Jim Hightower embodies many expected traits of a native Texan: He’s stubborn, opinionated, delivers his radical views with an accent and dons a well-worn Stetson. However, his political opinions find no allegiance with the stereotypical conservative views of many Texans. Hightower is a populist and seeks a revival of democracy, honesty and prosperity for a country and people in which he adamantly believes. The public radio fixture and former Texas agriculture commissioner participates in a fundraiser for local radio station KSFR this week, and he’s sure to cause an uproar. His commentary does more than bandage grim realities with humorous candor; it educates and encourages listeners. Issues highlighted in his Hightower Lowdown newsletter—which include increased forces in Afghanistan as well as the Goldman Sachs bailout—are sure to be on the bill along with stories from his latest book, Swim Against the Current: Even a Dead Fish Can Go With the Flow, on how to buck the system.
