Inner Demons

Nightmares have always been as integral to art as daydreams. Painters Hieronymus Bosch, Edvard Munch and countless others have touched on the dark realms of the subconscious with chilling and sometimes disturbing imagery. In Inner Demons, fearless artists of today continue this tradition. Artist America Meredith tells SFR via email, “The idea behind Inner Demons is that we have our dark sides…but in the interest of health and honesty, should occasionally confront [them] head-on…Art encompasses the whole of human experience, not just the positive side of things.” With influences ranging from Dadaism to Japanese calligraphy, the artists in Inner Demons use a wide variety of media to delve into the secrets of both their internal thoughts and external surroundings.  Leah Saulnier, in oil paints, turns common childhood staples (sock monkeys, Pez dispensers) into sinister, monstrous harbingers of impending doom of the playroom variety. Melissa Melero’s abstract mixed-media work is visceral and violent, but beautiful in its use of a vibrant palate. The works span all mediums and inspirations, but all contribute to the ongoing story of human nature and its less pleasant side. (Tiana Finney)
