Contend
Muscle contractions flare in bold brushstrokes as boxers brace for impact on Steve Huston’s canvases. It’s all part of the artful representation of a world dedicated to competitive violence. Huston’s classic depiction of these halted moments is akin to the work of a sculptor; he demonstrates obsessive attention to form and movement to successfully render every nuance in the basic structure of the human body. Huston began his art career as an illustrator for entertainment giants like Universal Studios and Paramount Pictures. Although the title Contend directly addresses the gloved combatants, the greater meaning has more to do with the continued evolution of Huston’s craft: embracing the challenge of pure creative inspiration as opposed to adhering to the criteria of a client. His shift from the glitz of Hollywood studios to the grit of his latest subject matter is a testament to his creative journey from illustrator to fine artist. (Amy Kuhre)
